| Abstract: | First paragraph: Chaque année, d'innombrables graines germent sur le sol de la forêt, devenant des plantules qui déploient leurs premières feuilles. Ces jeunes plantes doivent surmonter d'énormes épreuves avant qu'il y ait floraison et fructification. Certaines mourront, faute de lumière dans la pénombre du sousbois, tandis que d'autres seront desséchées par le soleil dans la savane. D'autres encore seront mangées ou piétinées par des animaux, ou dépériront petit à petit, car le lieu où elles auront poussé leur sera défavorable. Néanmoins, une petite proportion de graines aura trouvé des conditions idéales, et si elles échappent aux herbivores affamés et aux accidents, elles se développeront lentement. De petites plantes herbacées peuvent ne vivre qu'une année, et meurent après la fructification, tandis que certains arbres peuvent dépasser 1.000 ans et produire des fruits pendant de nombreuses années. |
